President Bola Tinubu has declared three days of national mourning for those killed in Monday’s Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash in Ondo State.
In a statement issued on 5 October, the State House said flags should fly at half-mast across Nigeria in honour of the Air Force personnel who died. Tinubu also ordered the Air Force to investigate the cause of the crash.
The ATR-42 aircraft was travelling from Benin City to Lagos on what officials described as a routine mission. It crashed near a naval base in the Igbokoda area. The State House said 25 passengers and seven crew members were aboard.
Casualties and investigation
Reuters reported that there were no survivors among the 32 people aboard, citing the president. Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa said rescue workers had found no confirmed survivors at the crash site, according to TheCable.
The State House said the Air Force would release the names of the officers after their families had been contacted. No cause for the crash has been established.
