The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has proposed closing the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, for approximately 25 days to carry out essential repairs and resurfacing work.
The proposed closure is expected to begin on 20 October 2026, but FAAN says the dates are not yet final.
According to a statement issued on Thursday, 8 October, by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, sections of the runway have developed potholes and extensive surface cracks.
The statement, published by the News Agency of Nigeria, said recent heavy rainfall had worsened the runway’s condition, making more extensive repairs necessary.
Why FAAN Wants to Close the Runway
The planned work will involve repairing damaged pavement, treating cracks and resurfacing affected sections of the runway.
FAAN said the repairs are intended to improve safety and prepare the airport for increased passenger traffic during the Christmas travel period.
The authority also plans to extend the runway to allow it to accommodate larger aircraft as demand grows.p
As BusinessDay reported, FAAN considers the proposed work necessary to restore the runway to a safer operating condition.
What Travellers Should Know
The proposed closure could affect flights operating through Owerri Airport, although specific airline cancellations or revised schedules have not been announced.
FAAN has advised passengers planning to use the airport during the proposed period to contact their airlines for information about flight schedules and possible alternative arrangements.
The authority says it will continue discussions with airlines and other stakeholders before announcing the confirmed closure and reopening dates.
For now, passengers should not assume that flights have already been cancelled simply because a proposed closure period has been announced.
Airport Upgrade Plans
The runway repairs form part of wider efforts to improve aviation facilities in Imo State.
In July, Nigeria’s State House reported that a federal government media delegation had inspected ongoing airport upgrades, including runway development.
The proposed closure would allow further work on the runway ahead of the busy end-of-year travel period.
FAAN has yet to announce the final shutdown dates, the reopening date or detailed alternative travel arrangements.
Passengers are therefore advised to follow official FAAN and airline announcements before making changes to their journeys.
