Super Micro Computer has sharply raised its revenue outlook for the first quarter of its 2027 financial year, citing stronger demand for artificial intelligence platforms and equipment used in data centres.
The US based server manufacturer said on October 20 that it expects revenue for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, to reach between $18.5 billion and $19.5 billion.
That is above its previous forecast of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion, issued in August. The updated estimate reflects a significant increase in expected sales as technology companies continue investing in computing infrastructure to support artificial intelligence applications.
In its “official business update“, Super Micro also raised its expected gross margin to between 12% and 12.5%, compared with its earlier guidance of 10.4% to 10.8%.
The company stressed that these figures are preliminary estimates and may change when its financial reporting process is completed.
AI Infrastructure Drives Higher Expectations
Super Micro manufactures server systems and other computing equipment used in data centres, enterprise IT, and AI infrastructure.
The growing adoption of AI tools has increased demand for specialised servers capable of handling the computing workloads required to train and run large AI models.
Major technology companies have been expanding their data-centre capacity to support those workloads, creating opportunities for equipment suppliers such as Super Micro.
Reuters reported that the company’s revised outlook exceeded market expectations. Following the announcement, Super Micro shares rose in after hours trading, while shares of other technology hardware companies, including Dell Technologies and Hewlett Packard Enterprise, also advanced.
The market reaction suggests investors viewed the revised forecast as a positive indication of demand for AI related computing equipment.
Revenue Forecast Rises by Billions
Super Micro’s new revenue range is between $18.5 billion and $19.5 billion, compared with its previous guidance of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion.
The lower and upper ends of the forecast have each increased by $4 billion. This represents a substantial upward revision to management’s expectations for the quarter.
The company also expects gross margins of 12% to 12.5%, above its earlier estimate of 10.4% to 10.8%.
Gross margin measures the proportion of revenue remaining after the direct costs of producing goods and delivering services are deducted. It is not the same as net profit, which also accounts for other operating expenses, interest, taxes, and additional costs.
The updated outlook therefore points to stronger expected sales and improved gross margins, but it does not establish the company’s final revenue or net profit for the quarter.
Final Results Still Awaited
Super Micro said the financial figures were based on preliminary results and management estimates. The company scheduled its first quarter fiscal 2027 earnings call for November 3, when it is expected to provide a fuller account of its performance.
The final results will help determine how much of the projected revenue increase is reflected in completed sales and how the company’s margins and costs developed during the period.
The update also comes amid wider debate over the scale of spending on AI infrastructure and how quickly technology companies will generate returns from their investments.
For server manufacturers, continued demand creates opportunities for growth. However, future performance will depend on customer spending, production capacity, competition, and the profitability of supplying increasingly sophisticated computing systems.
