Shooting Stars coach Salisu Yusuf has blamed poor defending for his team’s 2-0 defeat to Kun Khalifat in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) on Sunday, 11 October.
The NPFL’s official round-up said Chukwuma Agor opened the scoring in the 42nd minute before Uchechukwu Onuoha added the second in the 62nd minute. The result gave Kun Khalifat three points from the Matchday 8 fixture.
Yusuf admits opponents were better
In a report published on Monday, 12 October, Sports247 quoted Yusuf as accepting that Kun Khalifat deserved the victory.
“The opponents deserved to win. They played better and defended well. We didn’t play well, and we defended poorly. That’s why we lost the game,” he said.
Yusuf also said the team needed to take a closer look at its defence, which he described as a concern.
Winless run reaches five matches
The defeat followed a 0-0 draw at home to Kano Pillars on Wednesday, 7 October, in a rescheduled Matchday 3 fixture.
NPFL results show that Shooting Stars have now gone five league matches without a win, with two draws and three defeats during that run. They have also failed to score in their last three league matches.
Their record after eight league games stands at two wins, two draws and four defeats, giving them eight points.
Premium Times reported on Sunday that some supporters had called for Yusuf’s dismissal after the Kano Pillars draw. Those calls came before the defeat to Kun Khalifat.
Those calls came from supporters. They do not confirm that the club has decided to dismiss Yusuf.
