Agbara Nla: The Return grosses over ₦307m, ranks fourth among Nollywood films in 2026, distributor says

Nigerian faith-based film Agbara Nla: The Return has grossed more than ₦307.2 million at the box office, according to figures announced by its distributor, Nile Group, on Friday, 16 October 2026.

The distributor said the film had become the fourth highest-grossing Nollywood title released in 2026 and the highest-grossing Nollywood film ever released in October.

As reported by PUNCH, Nile Group announced the milestone on Instagram while thanking audiences for supporting the production.

The figures represent reported gross ticket sales rather than the film’s profit. Its position in the annual rankings could also change as other Nollywood productions continue their cinema runs.

Box-office earnings rise beyond ₦307 million

The latest announcement marks another milestone for the film, which opened in Nigerian cinemas on 1 October.

Its reported cumulative gross has increased from approximately ₦170.6 million during its opening period to more than ₦307.2 million.

That represents an increase of at least ₦136.6 million since the earlier reported total.

Nile Group also described the film as the highest-grossing Nollywood title ever released in October.

The claim concerns the total earnings of films released during that month, not just ticket sales recorded in October.

Although the distributor’s figures have been reported by Nigerian news organisations, Trivane News has not independently audited the complete 2026 box-office rankings.

The fourth-place position should therefore be understood as the distributor’s reported ranking as of 16 October.

Strong opening sets the pace

The film attracted attention earlier in the month after recording approximately ₦170.6 million from preview screenings and its first official weekend in cinemas.

According to Premium Times, preview screenings generated about ₦71.4 million before the film earned a further ₦99.2 million between Friday, 2 October, and Sunday, 4 October.

The combined figure covered the preview period and the first weekend. It should not be described as earnings from the three-day weekend alone.

Industry reporting also identified the opening as the strongest for a faith-based Nollywood film and the biggest non-December opening recorded for a Nigerian production.

The achievement is notable because December is traditionally an important period for Nigerian cinema, with major releases competing for audiences during the festive season.

The film’s October performance shows that a Nigerian production can attract substantial cinema audiences outside the year-end holiday period.

However, one successful release does not establish a wider industry trend without comparable figures from other films.

A new chapter for a familiar Nigerian film

Agbara Nla: The Return revisits the Christian film originally created by Nigerian filmmaker Mike Bamiloye in the early 1990s.

The new production was directed by his sons, Damilola Mike-Bamiloye and Joshua Mike-Bamiloye, also known as Jay Mikee.

The original Agbara Nla became a familiar title among audiences of Nigerian Christian films, particularly through home-video and community screenings.

The new version brings the story to contemporary cinema audiences more than three decades later.

Mike Bamiloye also returns to the role of Isawuru, a character associated with the original production.

As Nairametrics reported, the film’s opening performance placed it among Nollywood’s strongest cinema debuts, with previews contributing substantially to its initial earnings.

What the figures mean

The reported ₦307.2 million total is a measure of box-office revenue from ticket sales.

It does not show how much money the producers or distributor will ultimately retain after cinema shares, distribution costs, marketing expenses and production spending.

The financial success of the project cannot therefore be measured by gross ticket sales alone.

Nevertheless, the figures indicate significant audience demand for the production during its opening weeks.

The film’s performance also provides a useful example of how an established Nigerian story can reach a new generation through a cinema remake.

Final ranking remains open

Nile Group’s latest announcement places Agbara Nla: The Return fourth among Nollywood films released in 2026, based on the distributor’s reported figures.

That is a position at this stage of the year, not a final annual ranking.

Other productions may continue to earn revenue, while new films scheduled for release before December ends could change the order.

For now, the confirmed development is the distributor’s announcement that Agbara Nla: The Return has passed ₦307.2 million in reported box-office takings.

Its eventual place among the year’s highest-grossing Nollywood films will become clearer when the full-year figures are available.
