Russia says emergency crews rescued all 23 Indian nationals aboard the Liberian-flagged tanker Aframax Rio after an unmanned-vessel attack set it ablaze off the country’s Black Sea coast on Tuesday, 6 October.
According to Reuters’ report quoting Russia’s Transport Ministry, no injuries were reported among the crew. Regional authorities also closed beaches in Sirius, near Sochi, following the fire.
Fire complicated the emergency response
PTI’s report, published by Rediff, said the crew had been evacuated to shore. It quoted Russian authorities saying the intensity of the fire initially prevented rescue vessels from approaching safely to begin firefighting.
Russian Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin convened an emergency response meeting. Sochi Mayor Andrey Proshunin also announced temporary restrictions on access to beaches and seafront areas, according to the report.
The reports reviewed do not establish that the fire has been extinguished or provide a verified assessment of the tanker’s damage.
Responsibility remains unconfirmed
The New Indian Express reported that Russia had not immediately identified those responsible. It also noted the absence of independent confirmation that Ukraine carried out the attack.
The description of an unmanned-vessel strike therefore remains an account attributed to Russian authorities. The reported rescue does not establish who attacked the ship.
Separate search halted off Bulgaria
The tanker fire is separate from Tuesday’s attacks on two commercial vessels in Bulgaria’s Black Sea exclusive economic zone.
In a Wednesday update, Reuters reported that Bulgaria had halted its search for crew members of the vessel that sank. The crew of the other, damaged vessel had been rescued. Responsibility for those attacks also remained unclear in that report.
Trivane View
The reported rescue offers relief for the tanker’s crew, but the wider shipping picture remains troubling. These incidents concern people whose work takes them through waters affected by war.
Coverage should keep each vessel’s circumstances distinct and preserve attribution around responsibility. Further reporting should establish the tanker’s condition, any environmental damage, and the evidence behind competing accounts of the attack.
