Houthis Claim Attacks on Saudi Targets as Israel Marks 7 October Anniversary

Yemen’s Houthi movement claimed new attacks on Saudi airports and military facilities on Wednesday, 7 October, as fighting intensified between the group and Saudi-backed forces.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said missiles and drones had targeted sites in Saudi Arabia. According to the Associated Press report republished by Click2Houston, he provided no evidence supporting the claims.

The Saudi-led coalition separately said it intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile north of Riyadh.

Airport attack claims remain unconfirmed

The Houthis named King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Abha airport, and military facilities among their targets.

AP reported flight disruption at Riyadh’s airport, citing the tracking platform Flightradar24. Disruption alone does not establish that an airport was struck or damaged.

In its report on the fighting, Reuters said Saudi authorities had not immediately confirmed the claimed attacks on Riyadh and Abha airports.

Reuters also reported that Yemen’s Transport Ministry said Aden airport had been attacked, prompting a flight diversion. Fighting has centred on territory near Bab el-Mandeb, an important shipping passage linking the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

Displacement grows in Yemen

The renewed fighting is forcing more families from their homes.

An International Organization for Migration statement republished by Mirage News put the number displaced at 201,217 people across 10 governorates. Nearly 198,000 had fled since 1 September.

The agency said Ta’iz had the largest concentration of displaced people. More than 3,700 others had crossed the sea to Djibouti, many arriving with little food or water.

IOM Director General Amy Pope appealed for urgent funding to provide shelter, food, and protection. The agency also called on all parties to protect civilians and aid workers and allow humanitarian assistance to reach people safely.

Israel remembers the 7 October attacks

Separately, Israelis gathered at memorial sites on Wednesday to mark the third anniversary of the Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023.

AP reported commemorations at roadside shelters and the Nova music festival site. Around 1,200 people were killed in the attacks and 251 were taken hostage.

The anniversary also falls amid continuing hardship in Gaza, where AP described widespread destruction and large numbers of Palestinians living in temporary shelters following Israel’s military campaign.

These are separate developments within a region facing several conflicts. The anniversary does not, by itself, establish a direct connection to Wednesday’s reported attacks on Saudi targets.

Trivane View

Military statements need evidence before claims of successful strikes become established facts. Flight disruption, an intercepted missile, and damage to an airport are different developments and should be reported separately.

For civilians, the immediate concerns are safety, shelter, and access to food and medical care. Those needs must remain central as the fighting spreads and families remember people killed or taken hostage.
