Commonwealth Scholarship Applications Close Today

The application window for the 2027/28 Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships closes at 16:00 British Summer Time on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. 4:00 pm in Nigeria. The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) says applications must be submitted through its official online system and that late or incomplete documentation cannot be accepted.

Who Is Eligible to Apply?

The CSC’s official guidance lists Nigeria among eligible countries for its agency nominated Master’s programme, intended for applicants who could not otherwise afford postgraduate study in Britain. Candidates must normally be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country and available to begin a UK programme in September or October 2027.

The standard academic requirement is at least an upper second-class first degree, or a lower second-class degree accompanied by an appropriate postgraduate qualification. Applicants must meet the scheme’s other eligibility conditions, including those relating to citizenship or refugee status.

The Nigerian Federal Ministry of Education previously publicised the opportunity and its application requirements, as reported by Punch in September. However, national nominating bodies may operate their own selection procedures and earlier deadlines; a CSC application alone does not guarantee that an applicant will be nominated.

What Documents Are Required?

The Commission requires proof of citizenship or eligible refugee status, complete higher-education transcripts, and at least two references. Missing transcript pages, unsigned or improperly formatted references, and late supporting documents can make an application ineligible.

Applicants must use the CSC’s own application platform, CSC Central, and also satisfy the requirements of a recognised nominating organisation. The programme is competitive: nominators recommend candidates, but final selection rests with the Commission.

The CSC says it does not charge an application fee. Candidates should be wary of third-party websites or agents promising guaranteed scholarship awards in exchange for payment or requesting documents through unofficial channels.

What Does the Scholarship Cover?

Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships generally fund approved tuition fees, travel, and a living allowance, subject to the programme’s conditions. The award is intended to support full-time taught postgraduate study and strengthen skills relevant to development priorities in scholars’ home countries.

Applicants should not confuse this programme with Commonwealth Shared Scholarships, which operate through approved UK university courses and follow a separate timetable. The CSC scholarship finder distinguishes the available programmes and eligibility requirements.

For candidates still completing their applications, the immediate priority is to verify the exact deadline and ensure every mandatory document has been uploaded. For those who miss the window, the appropriate next step is to check future CSC programmes and their separate opening dates—not to pay an intermediary offering a late submission.

What Happens Next?

The application deadline is 4 pm Nigeria time on 20 October 2026. Candidates who submit before the deadline should monitor their nominating agency and CSC channels for selection updates. Those who miss the deadline should check the CSC scholarship finder for separately scheduled opportunities.
