Nigeria’s National Pension Commission says a ₦758 billion Federal Government Pension Bond has cleared inherited pension liabilities, including obligations dating back to 2007.
PenCom Director-General Omolola Oloworaran gave the update at the commission’s media conference in Lagos on Tuesday, 6 October. According to The Guardian’s report, she said the intervention had benefited 957,045 Nigerians.
The commission also says accrued pension rights have been funded ahead of retirement for eligible federal employees due to retire through December 2029.
What the funding through 2029 means
According to Punch’s coverage of the conference, Oloworaran said these accrued rights had already been credited to the Retirement Savings Accounts of enrolled federal employees following a verification and enrolment exercise.
The distinction matters: the announcement concerns accrued rights for the employees covered by that exercise. It does not establish that every Nigerian pensioner’s monthly payments have been prepaid until 2029.
Workers approaching retirement should confirm with their Pension Fund Administrator whether their account has received the relevant credit and whether their records are complete.
A shorter wait for retirement benefits
The Guardian also reported that PenCom had directed Pension Fund Administrators to process and approve retirement benefits within a new 48-hour timeline under its Zero Waiting Time policy.
Oloworaran said procedures had previously taken as long as 21 months. The new timeline concerns processing and approval; it should not be read as a guarantee that every retiree will receive money within 48 hours of leaving work.
What the official figures show
Separately, PenCom’s published July 2026 industry report recorded pension fund assets of approximately ₦31.51 trillion and 11.35 million Retirement Savings Account members.
The report is marked unaudited. These figures describe the wider pension industry, rather than the amount distributed through the intervention bond.
The backlog clearance and advance funding figures remain claims attributed to PenCom. The newspaper reports cover the same conference announcement.
Trivane View
Clearing unpaid pension benefits can bring relief to people who have waited for money they earned. The next test is whether eligible workers receive their benefits on time and whether fresh arrears are prevented.
PenCom should make it easy for workers to check who is covered, what has reached their account and how to resolve any missing payment. Clear records and reliable payments matter more to retirees than the size of an announcement.
