Nigeria’s Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board says it is working to establish a Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination centre in Ottawa, Canada, with the aim of starting operations in 2027.
In a post on its official X account, JAMB said the proposed centre would give eligible Nigerians in Canada and elsewhere in North America another way to sit the UTME while seeking admission to Nigerian tertiary institutions. The announcement followed a visit by its registrar, Segun Aina, to the Nigerian High Commission in Ottawa.
What candidates need to know
The centre remains a proposal. JAMB has not announced an opening date, examination venue, registration process, or fees for Ottawa. Candidates should wait for those details from the board before making travel or application plans.
If the centre opens as intended, some applicants would no longer need to travel to Nigeria solely to take the UTME. It could be useful to families in Canada whose children are considering higher education in Nigeria. JAMB said the plan is intended to make that route more accessible to Nigerians abroad.
This would expand JAMB’s examination arrangements outside Nigeria. It does not change admission requirements or guarantee a place at a Nigerian institution. The next practical step is for JAMB to confirm the Ottawa centre and publish instructions for candidates.
