Ohale Retires from Super Falcons Duty after 16 Years

Super Falcons defender Osinachi Ohale has retired from international football, ending a 16-year career with Nigeria.

The 34-year-old announced her decision in a farewell statement on Friday, describing it as a difficult moment after representing the country across several generations of the national team.

“After 16 years of wearing the Nigerian jersey, representing my country, and giving everything I had to the beautiful game, I have made the very difficult decision to retire from international football,” Ohale said.

She leaves the Super Falcons with 86 senior caps, four FIFA Women’s World Cup appearances and seven Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) appearances.

Ohale won the WAFCON title with Nigeria in 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2024, the last staged in Morocco in 2025. The five titles rank her among the competition’s most successful players, according to the Confederation of African Football.

She also played at the Women’s World Cup in 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023. At the 2023 tournament in Australia and New Zealand, she scored in Nigeria’s 3–2 group-stage win over co-hosts Australia.

Ohale first represented Nigeria at the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, helping the Falconets reach the final, before joining the senior team later that year.

Ohale thanked her teammates, coaches, support staff, family, the Nigeria Football Federation and fans who backed the team through its highs and lows.

“To the Nigerian fans: thank you for believing in us, supporting us, celebrating with us, and standing by us through every high and every low,” she said.

She said she was leaving with no regrets, calling the chance to represent Nigeria her greatest achievement.

“Eighty-six caps. Sixteen years. Four World Cups. Seven WAFCONs. Five WAFCON titles. But the greatest achievement of all is knowing that I had the privilege to serve my country,” she said.

“The jersey will leave my shoulders, but it will never leave my heart.”

The retirement applies only to international football; Ohale has not announced plans to step away from club football.

Her exit marks the end of an era for the Super Falcons, who must now replace one of African women’s football’s most experienced defenders.
