NDC prepares campaign council, orders nationwide agent lists

The Nigeria Democratic Congress has begun consultations to establish its Presidential Campaign Council ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election.

In a statement published through its official account, the party said its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, had held several meetings with the NDC leadership over the proposed campaign structure.

The statement, dated 21 September and signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, said the council would be announced after the candidates submit their remaining nominations and other contributions.

Candidates to nominate senior campaign officials

According to the NDC, Obi and Kwankwaso have been given room to nominate several senior members of the campaign council in consultation with the party.

The positions include campaign director-general, deputy director-general for the North, campaign spokesperson, deputy spokesperson, head of new media, finance director and deputy finance director.

The party said it had prepared an organisational structure for the campaign in August and shared it with the two candidates. It added that nominations had also been received from party stakeholders across Nigeria.

The proposed finance director and deputy finance director would work with the NDC national treasurer to manage campaign funds. The party said donations would be paid into a dedicated presidential campaign account as part of its financial reporting arrangements.

No date has been announced for the inauguration of the council. The NDC said an earlier plan to inaugurate it during the first week of September was postponed because of Obi’s travel schedule.

Party begins election-agent preparations

The NDC also directed its state and local government chairmen to meet candidates and other stakeholders and prepare two sets of party-agent lists.

One list will cover the National Assembly elections, while the second will cover the governorship and state assembly contests.

The exercise must be completed within two weeks, according to the party. The proposed agents will be reviewed by the NDC leadership, including Obi and Kwankwaso, before training begins.

A committee led by the party’s Deputy National Chairman for the South, Babatunde Alli, will supervise the process. Other members include Vin Martin Ilo, Yunusa Tanko, Nafiu Dankura and the party’s six zonal vice-chairmen.

NDC urges unity ahead of 2027

The party called on its candidates and support groups to avoid internal disputes and concentrate on the coming elections.

Obi and Kwankwaso joined the NDC in May after leaving the opposition alliance led by the African Democratic Congress. Their departure weakened efforts to present a single opposition candidate against President Bola Tinubu, Reuters reported at the time.

Obi later secured the NDC presidential nomination, while Kwankwaso emerged as his running mate. The planned campaign council will coordinate their national campaign once its membership and timetable are formally announced.
