Céline Dion performs first full concert in six years after health battle

Canadian singer Céline Dion has performed her first full concert in six years, marking a major return to live music after health problems forced her to suspend touring.

The 58-year-old singer opened her Paris concert series at the Plénitude Arena in Nanterre, near the French capital, on Saturday, September 12.

She performed before a sold-out audience of about 35,000 people, according to a statement published on Dion’s official website.

Dion became emotional as she addressed the audience during the concert.

“I made a promise to come back,” she said, before telling fans that she was singing for them, for herself and for life.

First full concert since 2020

The Paris performance was Dion’s first complete concert since March 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic interrupted her Courage World Tour.

Her health later prevented her from returning to a regular touring schedule.

Dion revealed in December 2022 that she had been diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome, a rare neurological condition that can cause severe muscle stiffness and painful spasms.

She subsequently cancelled the remaining dates of her Courage World Tour while undergoing treatment and working to regain enough strength to perform.

Although the Paris show was her first full concert in six years, it was not her first appearance on stage during that period.

In July 2024, Dion performed “Hymne à l’amour” from the Eiffel Tower during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games. The performance was brief but widely regarded as an important step in her return to music.

Her latest concert represents a more demanding comeback because it required her to complete a full-length live show before a large audience.

Reuters reported that the performance included major songs from Dion’s English and French catalogues, including “My Heart Will Go On,” “All By Myself” and “On ne change pas.”

Paris concert series begins

The opening concert was the first date in a planned 26-show engagement running through September and October 2026, with additional performances scheduled for May 2027.

The production was divided into four acts and featured large video screens, specially designed stage clothing and a band led by Dion’s longtime musical director, Scott Price.

The singer performed songs including “Because You Loved Me,” “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” “Courage” and the French-language track “Dansons.”

Dion originally announced the Paris concerts on March 30, her 58th birthday.

At the time, she said she felt strong and grateful for the opportunity to perform again. She also acknowledged feeling nervous about returning after such a long absence.

The official announcement described the concert series as a limited engagement featuring some of the most recognised songs from her career.

A carefully managed return

Dion has spoken publicly about the effect stiff-person syndrome has had on her movement and singing.

Her health journey was explored in the 2024 documentary “I Am: Celine Dion,” which followed her treatment and attempts to return to performing.

Her comeback is therefore being managed through a fixed series of concerts rather than a conventional international tour.

The opening night confirmed that Dion had regained enough strength to deliver a complete performance. However, neither the singer nor her representatives have announced plans for a wider world tour.

For now, the Paris engagement represents the clearest sign yet that one of the world’s most successful singers has resumed live performance after years of uncertainty.
