20 Abducted Prospective NYSC Members Regain Freedom in Imo

Twenty prospective National Youth Service Corps members abducted along the Owerri–Onitsha Road in Imo State have regained their freedom, according to reports published on Wednesday, 7 October.

PUNCH reported that the graduates were receiving treatment at the Department of State Services Hospital in Owerri.

The newspaper said the managing director of Uko Akwa Ibom Motors Nigeria Limited, Isiah Akpan, confirmed their release on Wednesday. (Mpunchng.com

Vanguard also reported that one civilian was rescued alongside the 20 prospective corps members in a joint security operation. (vanguardngr.com)

Abducted while travelling to camp

The victims were travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, towards NYSC orientation camps when gunmen attacked two commercial buses on Thursday, 1 October.

Channels Television’s earlier reporting identified destinations in Abia and Akwa Ibom states and placed the attack around Umunoha in Imo.

Their abduction prompted a search involving the police and other security agencies, while families appealed for help to secure their release. (channelstv.com)

NYSC director-general visits victims

PUNCH reported that NYSC Director-General Brigadier-General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu visited the hospital to meet the rescued graduates and assess their condition.

He was accompanied by the Imo State Commissioner of Police, the state DSS director and the commander of the 34 Artillery Brigade.

The report did not provide a detailed medical assessment or a timetable for the graduates to return home or continue their orientation programme. (punchng.com)

Security agencies had intensified the search.

Before the release, Imo State Commissioner of Police Audu Bosso told Channels Television that drone surveillance had helped operatives locate the suspected holding area.

He said intelligence indicated that improvised explosive devices had been planted around the camp, complicating efforts to reach the victims.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Shehu Umar Nadada was deployed to coordinate the operation, with additional personnel and equipment assigned to the search.

Those earlier statements described the challenges facing rescuers. They do not establish the precise circumstances of the eventual release. (channelstv.com)

The immediate priority should be medical care, emotional support, and clear communication with the victims’ families. Their recovery should guide decisions about returning home or continuing national service.

The rescue also leaves a wider responsibility: improving security on routes used by graduates travelling to camp and explaining what steps are being taken to prevent another abduction.
