Former vice-president Atiku Abubakar has asked President Bola Tinubu’s administration to publish records explaining the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited’s reported ₦11.2 trillion receivables from the Federation.
In a statement issued on Sunday, 4 October, by his spokesman, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku sought details of contracts, payments, and results associated with protecting Nigeria’s oil and gas infrastructure, according to The Guardian. guardian.ng
What the figure covers
The demand concerns an accounting category broader than pipeline surveillance.
TheCable, which reported examining NNPC’s 2025 audited accounts, said the amount was recorded as “other receivables from federation”. It described the category as covering advances to the Federation and costs incurred to secure oil and gas assets.
Receivables represent amounts a company expects to recover. The reported total does not, by itself, establish how much was spent specifically on pipeline security.
TheCable also reported that an approved arrangement allows NNPC to incur asset protection costs on the government’s behalf and recover those expenses from the Federation. thecable.ng
Contracts and campaign funding
Atiku also requested procurement documents and payment records concerning government contractors. He questioned whether contractors had provided financial or material support for Tinubu’s re-election activities.
Those questions do not establish that public money financed a political campaign. The reporting reviewed does not independently substantiate wrongdoing.
What remains unresolved
The immediate issue is whether the government and NNPC will provide a breakdown identifying the advances, asset protection costs, contractors, and work covered by the receivables.
Atiku’s statement is a demand for scrutiny. It is not an announcement that an investigation has been ordered, and no such order was identified in the sources reviewed. guardian.ng, thecable.ng
